St. Peter’s employs a rich tradition of liturgical music that consists of hymns, psalms, antiphons, and various songs of prayer and worship. With choir, cantor, and organ, the music ministry leads the mass with a traditional repertoire of sacred music in English, Latin, and German. The music ministry also provides music for weddings and funerals. In addition to music for service, the music ministry hosts other music events including concerts, recitals, and workshops.
Please contact our Director of Music and Liturgy, Mr. Mat Burkepile, if you would like to learn about opportunities to serve in the music ministry. We are always happy to welcome new members to our choir families!
The Choirs at St. Peter’s
Chorus Angelicus – Composed of school-aged children (grades 3-6), this choir for young singers leads the music liturgy at the 7:40 AM Friday Mass and the first 5:30 PM Saturday Vigil Mass of each month during the academic year. Chorus Angelicus also performs one concert during the Fall and Spring seasons in addition to special services throughout the liturgical year. Children learn musicianship for singing and playing instruments. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays, 3:30 PM to 4:30pm.
Schola Cantorum – This adult choir consists of two performing groups; one for the 8:00 AM Sunday Mass and one for the 10:00 AM Sunday Mass. Both choirs combine for special services and concerts. The choir focuses on classical vocal technique and traditional sacred music with Latin and English chants, hymns, psalms, and prayers. Rehearsals are Tuesdays, 5:30 PM to 7:00PM, and Wednesdays, 5:30 PM to 6:45 PM.
Cantors – Strong singers serve as cantors with and without choir and lead responses during Saturday vigil and Sunday masses as well as masses for Wednesdays, weddings, and funerals.
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”
